AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR NEW STUDENTS
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Violin/Viola
- Any three octave major scale
- Any three octave melodic minor scale
- One octave D major scale, four 16ths per pitch, spicacato; quarter note=120
- A solo demonstrating your musical and technical achievement
This piece should demonstrate vibrato and fluency in 3rd and 5th positions.
Examples: Violin-Mozart Concerti, Bach a Minor Concerto or comparable; Viola-Telemann Viola Concerto or comparable
- Sight reading
Cello/Bass
- Any three octave major scale (Bass-any two octave major scale)
- Any two octave minor scale
- One octave D major scale, four 16ths per pitch, spiccato; quarter note=88
- A short solo demonstrating your musical and technical achievement
This piece should demonstrate vibrato and fluency up to the octave.
Examples: Cello-Bach cello suites, Haydn C Major Concerto, Vivaldi Sonatas or comparable; Bass-Sonatas by Marcello or Vivaldi or comparable
- Sight reading
Woodwinds
- Any two octave major scale
- Any two octave melodic minor scale
- Chromatic scale to the fullest extent of your technique
- A short solo demonstrating your musical and technical achievement
Examples: Flute-Mozart Concerti or comparable; Oboe-Handel or Marcello Concerti or comparable; Clarinet-Weber Concertino or comparable; Bassoon-Telemann, Mozart or comparable

Brass
- Any two octave major scale
- Any two octave melodic minor scale

- A short solo demonstrating your musical and technical achievement

Percussion
- Snare Drum: Closed roll for 20 seconds, pp-crescendo-ff-diminuendo-pp; demonstrate basic rudiments

Piano
- Scales and arpeggios, major and minor, in as many octaves as you are comfortable
- A short solo demonstrating your musical and technical achievement
- Sight reading of both piano and harp parts
